18:44 ※ Election research: Primary candidates
This a perfect example of why we should have instant-runoff voting: we have to choose between more than one candidate, and need to worry about gaming our votes. Do we vote for the candidate we like the best, even if they’re unlikely to win, or do we just try to maximize both “electable” and “least bad”? If you’re unhappy with the current state of affairs that has given us a crop of right-wing authoritarians from both parties, there is an alternative. I commend your attention to the Center for Voting and Democracy, Californians for Electoral Reform, Public Campaign, and the California Clean Money Campaign. We need to start pressuring our cities and counties to show that these techniques work, then our states, then the country; in the long run, I think it’s the only way out of this mess.
Since I’m going to hold my nose and game my vote, I’m only giving my impressions of the front-runners.

22:43 ※ Blocking a poison pill isn’t as good as taking medicine, but it will do
The California Clean Money Campaign alerted me to the fact that tonight’s Sunnyvale City Council Meeting would be discussing an advisory measure about the public financing of electoral campaigns... one which had been crafted as a poison pill that would pretty much guarantee that no one would vote for it. A number of people turned up to speak against the wording and for public financing, and the matter is postponed until January 2008. For the record, the only councilmembers who raised their hands when asked if they supported clean elections were Christopher R. Moylan and Melinda Hamilton; I suspect the poison pill is the result of a collaboration between Anthony Spitaleri and John Howe. Honorable mention to Otto Lee for bringing discussion of the measure from “last” to “#5 out of 9”.| Current Mood: |

23:01 ※ Hold your nose and vote on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 (part 2)
( My election research -- propositions )If you’re disgusted by the results of our two-party system, you may wish to join Californians for Electoral Reform, the California IRV Coalition, and/or the Center for Voting and Democracy. (For voting-technology geeks, yes, Condorcet is a more robust preferential voting method than IRV, and I suspect will be much easier to sell once people are used to IRV.)

The California special election on November 8, 2005 is being held in an off year in hopes of a decreased turnout of people who hold middle-of-the-road positions. I urge you to get out there, hold your nose, and vote.| Current Mood: |
